Converting an Epson Desktop Printer into a Pigment Printer

Introduction

Converting your Epson printer from dye-based ink to our pigment inks will give you superior durability as well as increased fade and water resistance. Using pigment-based ink is especially useful for projects such as heat transfer shirts, HTV printing, label printing, sticker printing, or other crafts where longevity is important. If you are unsure about the type of ink to use for your application, please contact us.

Before you begin, it is important to check the normal ink type used by your Epson printer. For Epson printers that use pigment ink by default, there is obviously no conversion to do, because you are already using pigment ink!

The conversion procedures described on this page concern Epson printers that normally use dye-based ink. For these printers, we sell "Conversion Kits" that include each pigment ink color. You will then follow the conversion procedures below...

For better understanding, we've divided this guide into 3 parts. Please select the one that applies to your situation:

How to Convert a NEW EcoTank printer

All EcoTank models can be converted to pigment ink using our products. The ideal option is always to convert a brand-new printer out-of-the-box because the conversion procedure is truly very simple:

  1. Fill InkPot pigment ink directly into the tanks.

How to Convert a USED EcoTank printer

It is not easy to remove the ink from an EcoTank printer. For this reason, converting a brand-new printer is recommended. That said, if you want to convert a used EcoTank printer to pigment ink, here is the procedure:

  1. Before starting the conversion process, make sure to print a nozzle check to confirm that the printhead is working properly. Do not attempt to perform a conversion on a printer that is not printing correctly.
  2. Unplug the printer and remove all paper trays.
  3. The easiest way to remove the ink will be to turn the printer upside down, but be careful as this process can be messy. Turn the printer upside down over a bucket or other container and open the caps to empty the ink from the tanks.
  4. Turn the printer right-side up and wait a few minutes. Then repeat this process to drain even more ink. Repeat these steps to drain as much old ink as possible.
  5. Fill InkPot pigment ink directly into the tanks.
  6. Turn the printer back on and immediately perform a Power Cleaning. To see how to access the Power Cleaning option, refer to your printer's user manual.

How to Convert an Epson cartridge-based printer

  1. Before starting the conversion process, make sure to print a nozzle check to confirm that the printhead is working properly. Do not attempt to perform a conversion on a printer that is not printing correctly.
  2. Remove all the old ink cartridges. Fill and install a set of refillable cartridges with InkPot pigment ink.
  3. Do 5 Printhead Cleanings to empty the old ink.
